Will following a robust strategic planning process like the one offered by Method Frameworks overwhelm our management team?
We definitely would recommend our process due to the completeness of the plan it develops, although it is also important to point out that we have tailored Plan4 to every customer in some way or fashion - all the way back to our initial projects. We even offer our Strategic Planning First-aid as an fast and inexpensive approach to help get in-house planning efforts on track for companies that do not want outside consultants involved in the actual development of strategy.
In summary, our clients do not complain that our process overwhelmed them. They do, however, express appreciation for having gone through our planning process and feel that in all of its comprehensiveness - they were well looked after and are now much better positioned for the future.
Is the Method Frameworks approach rigid, or will it be adapted to our organization and tap into the deep knowledge and insights of our team to develop a strategic plan that is right for us?
Our approach is not rigid, but it does follow a process. Our philosophy and consulting approach embraces the idea that external consultants (strategic planning “experts”) do not have all of the right answers. Rather, those ideas, innovations, insights, and overall corporate direction come from those who work within the business and intimately understand the nuances of the industry. We are masters at facilitation, getting the best out of our clients. Their knowledge, our process.
Can you explain how the strategic plan gets communicated throughout the organization?
By the conclusion of a Method Frameworks engagement, we make sure that the vision, strategy and plan are succinctly shared, communicated and understood across and down through the organization. It is essential for all managers, employees and key business partners understand the basics of the strategy and how they fit in.
The overall strategic plan may be large, but we break down all levels of the plan to digestible-sized documents that are clear in their articulation of vision, strategy, supporting goals and the impacts to the audience reading that document. The plan master is of course a larger and more comprehensive grouping of information, but it is the components that flow from the overall plan that get relied upon during execution. In regard to communication of the plan and its messaging, we help clients every step of the way by building a communications campaign for the strategy roll-out. This includes very targeted detail for each audience, including articfacts such as:
- Strategic Plan Outcomes Architecture and how that translates across the organization
- Strategic Change Agenda describing each strategic pillar and the focus areas therein
- Organization Strategic Outcome, stated as easy to understand strategic directives
- Initiative Map that details actions for each strategic outcome
What makes the Plan4SM process a better way to plan?
Traditional planning approaches break down in a variety of places, such as ambiguity in objectives, vague accountabilities, poor understanding, or communication of plan goals. Plan4 has been engineered to overcome the shortcomings of traditional planning, replacing the “art” of visioning and planning with sound scientific and mathematical tools. With Plan4, superior and predictable outcomes are achieved.
Can you really understand our business well enough to help us plan more effectively than we can ourselves?
The value of having a good process is that it can be applied successfully wherever it is needed. We’ve applied our Plan4 process successfully across a wide array of industries, such as: transportation, high-tech, manufacturing, hospitality, business services, government and financial services. The process itself accounts for the fact that every organization is unique. We also offer Strategic Planning First-aid to companies that only want an assessment of their planning process, but want to make corrections themselves and do their planning internally.
Our business model is unique within our industry. How can you help us?
We have yet to encounter a planning engagement that we could not deliver the promised outcomes for the client and meet or exceed their expectations. That said, we will not take on a project unless we are confident we can deliver extraordinary value. The 140%+ ROI we consistently deliver to our clients is evidence of this promise.
We appreciate the competitive landscape of our client’s industries and the differentiation a business must maintain when delivering products and services to the market. Our Plan4 process coupled with your vision and knowledge of your business are a powerful force to be reckoned with.
Give me an example of an engagement in each planning category: Strategic, Operational and Technology.
Strategic: Large strategic planning engagements involve enterprise-level planning. Sometimes these engagements involve organizational restructuring, merger & acquisition (M&A) planning, long-term and short-term strategic business planning, enterprise resource planning (ERP) initiatives, and planning governance improvement or implementation. A medium-sized engagement might involve less than the entire enterprise (e.g. 3+ departments working collaboratively in planning around a major initiative or achievement of an organizational goal). A small engagement might involve only executive management and be focused on facilitated planning and problem solving, direction analysis, or something specific such as new growth option or communications planning.
Operational: Large operational planning engagements are usually focused at the division or department level and are typically dealing with functional areas of the business, such as human resources. departmental process improvements, field sales strategy development, departmental strategy alignment with the enterprise strategy, or departmental reorganizations. Medium-sized operational planning engagements can address a variety of business issues, but typically relate to examples like business continuity planning within a department or process improvement analysis and change planning within a department such as finance or accounting.
Technology: Technology planning is a broad category and covers a wide range of services from IT strategic planning to technology conversions and commercial off-the-shelf software implementations. Like the operational planning offering, engagements can sometimes be contained within the departmental context, such as an IT or technology department– but not in every case.
Who is the typical Method Frameworks client?
Our typical client has $100M or more in annual revenues, and shares our belief in the values of thorough planning and tight execution. They typically have some type of formalized planning process in place. We prefer working with clients that appreciate the value of planning and want to improve their methods and the results of their efforts. We have the experience and the most innovative and effective planning process available to go along with it. Our Plan4 process is designed to create client-centered value and helps us and our clients to do the right things, right - every time.
Does Method Frameworks work with smaller companies as well?
The answer is a qualified, "yes". We choose to work with clients that we feel can and will benefit from engaging Method Frameworks to help their organizations plan to achieve their goals. We look for receptivity to new thinking and a willingness to change as key determinants in selecting clients to work with – not size.
If we do choose to work with an outside consulting company for our strategic planning, how do we select the right firm?
If you are visiting our site and considering soliciting consulting
help for your organization, we would urge you to conduct a thorough comparative
analysis of the companies you are considering - honing in on the top three or so that seem to be a match in terms of qualifications and value offered. It is important when
selecting a firm that you choose one that respects your organization’s
culture, core values, structural hierarchy and processes. While changes
may be called for in any of those respective areas, a true
understanding of your organization and the issues that are affecting
performance must be gained in advance of changes to strategy, business
model or processes. Without this understanding, successful
implementation of new strategies, models or business process changes may
be misdirected and focus singularly on the symptoms rather than root
cause.
Your chosen consulting organization should do more than
just serve your immediate needs. Your consultant should be seeking to
provide you, as a client, with long lasting value in terms of the
following:
- Delivering long-range strategy that can and will be successfully and fully "operationalized" (tactically planned) throughout your business
- Ensuring critical knowledge transfer / training occurs between the consulting team and your staff
- Delivering realistic but challenging performance improvements and ensuring that they are “institutionalized” within your business so that they do not fade away once the consultants leave
- Doing everything possible to help you achieve and maintain operational excellence
Our budgets are tight right now. How affordable is your strategic planning offering?
Our consulting engagements are not nearly as expensive as you might expect. Over the past few years, many organizations have struggled to maintain target profit levels - even after adjusting for the impacts of the recession. To help clients continue to utilize our planning process and expertise in these challenging economic times, we have become experts in tailoring our Plan4 approach to fit all types of budget constraints. We are able to do this because we leverage a powerful planning framework that is easily adapted to most situations. Our knowledge in strategy development and planning positions us to correctly guide prospective clients on what must be done now - as core work - versus what can be addressed at a later point in time. We are passionate about achieving outstanding results for our clients, so we never allow budget constraints to translate into planning shortcuts that might have damaging or risky consequences. Our philosophy is to do it right or don't do it at all.
In the most extreme circumstances, if we are unable to adapt our approach to meet your budget, we will be truthful with you and tell you that we cannot successfully undertake your planning engagement.
Will our organization be required to buy any software or license your planning approach?
No. We believe in teaching our clients how to plan, so that is part of the process and business as usual for us. Our best outcome is for your organization to "institutionalize our process as your own - and we help you do it (see the Strategic Planning First-aid offerings). Likewise, there is no software sold as a part of our engagement.
